Position Summary:
The Accountant will play a key role in supporting the daily financial operations of the university. This role requires someone who is analytical, highly organized, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of non-profit accounting principles and a proactive approach to managing tasks, solving problems, and maintaining accuracy in all financial activities.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform daily accounting tasks, including general ledger entries, account reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP and non-profit accounting standards.
Monitor restricted and unrestricted funds, including grants, donor contributions, and designated funds.
Support the accounts payable and receivable functions, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Assist with university payroll processing and reconciliation, working closely with HR.
Help prepare for external audits, accreditation reviews, and internal financial evaluations.
Provide departmental support for budget tracking and expenditure review.
Collaborate with university departments to ensure proper financial documentation and fund use.
Participate in annual budget preparation and forecasting.
Maintain documentation for financial processes and controls.
Technology & Tools:
Must be proficient in Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Gmail) for daily communication and documentation
Experience with Jenzabar (or similar higher education ERP systems) is highly preferred; ability to navigate student accounts, financial modules, and reporting features
Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Blackbaud, or other fund accounting platforms
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
Minimum of 2 years of relevant accounting experience (non-profit or higher education experience strongly preferred)
Working knowledge of GAAP and fund accounting principles
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines with minimal supervision
Clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal
A strong sense of integrity and commitment to confidentiality and data accuracy
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience working in a university or academic institution
Understanding of student account operations and tuition billing processes
Familiarity with Title IV funds and financial aid disbursement accounting
