About

Dr. Willis is driven by a passion to know and to teach theology to students who are eager to learn more about their God and who are committed to serving Him in the 21st Century. He considers it a privilege to be a fellow student among students excited about exploring the riches of God’s truths as revealed in His inerrant Word. Theology has been his major and focus since his early days in training.

In 1961, Dr. Willis experienced the loss of his only sister and sibling when a drunk driver collided with the car in which she was a passenger. He was 15 years old at the time. Even though in 1953, at the age of seven, Wayne had placed his trust in Christ as his savior, he considered the tragedy of the death of his sister to be instrumental in focusing his attention on God’s plan for his life. At an evening worship service in the summer of 1962 at First Baptist Church, St. Clair Shores, Michigan, Wayne made a personal commitment to his Lord to prepare and then to preach and teach the Bible for the rest of his life. His ministry as a senior pastor began when he was 23 years of age, after graduating from Carolina University, at Whispering Pines Baptist Church in a little town called Hartsville, South Carolina. Professor Willis has served as senior pastor for about 30 years in six different churches located in South Carolina, Indiana, North Carolina, and Virginia. He has also ministered as interim pastor in six churches located in the Winston-Salem area, Yanceyville, N.C., and Albemarle, N.C.

After serving as Alumni Director of Carolina University he began his teaching career first as adjunct professor. He began teaching full-time at CU in 1995. He also served as Chair of Biblical Studies in the undergraduate school. He has been Professor of Theology in the Piedmont Divinity School at Carolina University since 2010.

Professor Willis has been married to Alice Evans Willis for 48 years. Alice is also an alumnus of Carolina University. They have three children (one in heaven) and eight grandchildren. Among the favorite hobbies of Professor Willis are working in the yard and picking bluegrass, blues, and gospel tunes on his guitar.
