About

Dr. Heather Burkard is a Criminologist and Forensic Specialist. She specializes in crime scene investigations and filicide (murder of a child by the child’s parent). Her research focuses on filicidal crime scenes and the homicidal patterns of parents who have killed their children.

In addition to a career in academia, Dr. Burkard has also actively worked in the field of forensic science as an investigator, instructor, and contractor for over 20 years. Her field experiences include: Forensic Investigator for the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office in FL; certified Crime Scene Investigator for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in NC; District Attorney Investigator assigned to the Homicide Prosecution Team, as well as the Safe Haven Team (a specialized prosecution team for sexual offenses against children and adults, felony assaults, and domestic violence homicides) for the Cabarrus County District Attorney’s Office in NC; and most recently, a certified Medicolegal Death Investigator for the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office in NC. She is a member of several national professional organizations and is a Past President of the North Carolina Professional Society on the Abuse of Children. Dr. Burkard has also been active in several local professional organizations, such as the Advisory Board for the Children's Advocacy Center of Cabarrus County, Cabarrus County Child Fatality Review Team, Cabarrus County Child Protection Team, and Advisory Board for the Public Service Academy at Concord High School.

Dr. Burkard has designed and implemented several new and exciting opportunities for criminal justice students. Most recently, she established an educational partnership with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Cold Case Homicide Review Team. Beginning in October 2022, students who meet specific criteria can enroll in a Cold Case Homicide Review Team class where they will learn about cold case investigations; work alongside Homicide Detectives and other retired federal, state, and local law enforcement officers; and analyze select homicide cold cases.
