About

Dr. Vanager’s love for psychology developed due to her taking an elective introductory

psychology course during her sophomore year at William Smith College. She later earned a

doctorate degree in cognitive, social, and developmental psychology from The New School for

Social Research. Her teaching career spans over a decade. Before embarking on a career in

academia, she spent a decade in the pharmaceutical and medical device sales industries. Those

positions cultivated her research interests, including parental styles, health promotion,

coping with chronic illness, and emotion work. She has presented her research at national and international conferences and has co-authored a book chapter on the importance of

mentoring at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
