Carr, Dr. Nancy

Dr. Carr has taught at the University of South Florida in the English Department in the First-Year Writing Program as a First-Year Writing Instructor.  While at USF, Carr developed in-person and online curriculums for undergraduate courses within the First-Year Writing program. She is dedicated to helping prepare students for the evolving skills needed for success in today’s global society. Since 2015, she has taught first-year international and undergraduate students at USF and has successfully designed and developed innovative curriculums to engage students in academic writing, research, and analysis. She is also a USF Certified Online Instructor who enjoys nurturing a curious spirit among her students, while encouraging a lifelong commitment to learning. 

While at USF, Dr. Carr worked closely with domestic and international undergraduate INTO students to develop their writing skills and create a passion for scholarly achievement, academic research, and rhetorical writing strategies. She believes students bring unique and valuable perspectives important to their learning. As an educator, Dr. Carr challenges students to read material not with a linear information exchange approach, but she encourages students to energetically question and critically analyze texts across all mediums. Dr. Carr develops learning experiences with the aim to drive a student’s curiosity and mindset to be reflective and open to considering new ways of being and thinking about the world.

She holds graduate certificates from the University of South Florida’s Muma College of Business in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace Setting and a Post-Crisis Leadership Graduate Certificate. Her dissertation focus includes first-generation female doctoral students with the aim to make higher educational policies more accessible. Dr. Carr’s dissertation research uses Paulo Freire’s critical consciousness theory to encourage agency and dialogue among her female participants through a conscious raising discussion and an innovative qualitative method called photovoice. 

Her scholarly research interests include education, learning styles, adult development, diversity, equity, and inclusion, curriculum development, literacy, and critical theories. She has presented posters at the American Association of Adult & Continuing Education and the Sunshine State Teaching and Learning Conference. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Sweet Briar College, a master’s degree in English Education from the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum & Instruction with an emphasis in Adult Education from the University of South Florida in the Department of Leadership, Policy, and Lifelong Learning.

Dr. Carr is committed to providing accessible educational and leadership opportunities for students at Carolina University. She is a passionate educator and facilitator of student learning with the goal to develop diverse and global perspectives among her students.
